10,000 contestants showed up in Orlando, Florida on January 20th show. 31 made it through. This night's guest judge is the delightful star of stage and screen, Kristin Chenoweth. Kristin won a Tony award for her role as Sally in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and was nominated for her role as Glinda in Wicked (Elphaba beat her, though). She also won an Emmy as Olive Snook on the unfortunately cancelled Pushing Daisies.
Here are some highlights from the show.
Theo Glitter was first. An obviously gay male wearing makeup and glitter. He shouted his way through singing and got rejected by all judges.
The insurance adjustor from Lakeland, Florida, sings "Someone to Watch Over Me." He has a nice, soulful voice, though a little lacking in excitement. Kristin likes how Seth made a Gershwin song his own. Kara wants to keep hearing him. Simon says Seth knows who he is. Randy wants Seth to exert more vibe, though. Despite that, the proud father gets four yeses.
Another waste of air time later, Jermaine Purifoy of Cleveland, Tennessee, gets his second chance. He tried out for the seventh season along with a bunch of his friends, but didn't make it through. This year, the 24-year-old telecommunications student belts out some Tony Bennett. He's a touch generic, but still very good. Kristin loved his pure, seamless sound. Randy declares Jermaine the best he has heard all season. Kara thinks he has an honest voice. Simon compliments Jermaine's choice of song. Second time around works for Jermaine, as he's through to Hollywood unanimously.
It's the end of day one, and it's up to 18-year-old Shelby Dressel to end the day on a high note. The waitress from Avon Park, Florida, was born with an undeveloped seventh cranial nerve, so the right side of her face is paralyzed. That left her unable to smile "correctly." She's very nervous, but she'll find a way to calm down. Let's hope the recent high school grad does cool her nerves.
Jay Stone of Miami tried to resurrect the spirit of Blake Lewis, the beat-box guy. He sang "Come Together," (if sing is the right word for it.) After his percussive bit, which Simon said left him "soaking wet," Jay sang a few bars of "Ain't No Sunshine When You're Gone" (normally), and he was passed on to Hollywood primarily because Kara actively lobbied Randy ("Come on, Randy. You know you want to see it in Hollywood.") Jay seemed rather cocky, but expect more beat-boxing in Hollywood.
Joining Jay on the trip to Hollywood are three lovely ladies with good voices. Janell Wheeler finally gives Idol a good performance of "House of the Rising Sun." Brittany Star James is an American girl with a golden ticket for "American Boy." Finally, Kasi Bedford will have "Something to Talk About" with her friends – three yeses.
Now it's time for security guard Cornelius Edwards, who learned some moves from his exotic dancer friends. O-kay. The 24-year-old from Boynton Beach, Florida, sings Tina Turner's "Proud Mary." He immediately loses points from me for crediting Tina instead of CCR. He's not the best singer, but really, he's not too terrible. A few bars in, Cornelius does the splits and... splits his pants. This tickles the judges just right, as they unanimously send him to Hollywood. Really?
Finally, we have Matt Lawrence, 25 of Starke, Florida. At the age of fifteen, Matt went on an "adventure" and made a "mistake" – he robbed a bank with a BB gun. Are you freaking kidding me? Matt ended up spending four birthdays behind bars, saying it like we're supposed to feel sorry for him. This is his chance to redeem himself before his family. We go from a guy escorted for being too persistent to a teenage felon, and we're supposed to feel for the felon. Okay, I believe in second chances, so maybe Matt learned something these past ten years.
The manager of his father's trucking company sings "Trouble," and despite knowing the trouble he has caused, he is pretty good. I still question anyone who's dumb enough to rob a bank. With a BB gun. As a teenager. But since Idol tells me to, I'll let that slide and compliment his voice. Simon thinks Matt is brilliant. He believes Matt could have written that song, meaning that in a not bad way. Kara agrees, loving the controlled high notes. Randy thinks he's genuine. The parole board... I mean, judging panel easily gives him a golden ticket.
All in all, there were 31 successful auditions in Orlando. Jenn will cover the action in Los Angeles next Tuesday, with some angels, some demons, and Katy Perry. I'll be back for Wednesday. See ya then! |

| I liked the beatbox guy. Also, the guy that robbed a bank was pretty good. Although, I don't think any of them will make top 12. |
